Lash wisdom & technique

Tips, techniques and behind-the-chair insight for clients and aspiring lash artists alike. Tap any title to read.

Eyelash extensions have become a staple in the beauty industry, and the three main techniques — Classic, Hybrid, and Volume — each create a distinctly different look. Understanding the difference is the first step to choosing what’s right for you.

Classic lashes: the natural choice

Classic lashes suit those who want a natural, effortless look. One extension is applied to each natural lash, making it ideal for clients with full natural lashes who want a refined enhancement rather than drama. It’s the most affordable option and the quickest to apply.

  • 1:1 ratio application
  • Natural, subtle appearance
  • Minimal volume
  • Thicker extensions
  • Application: 1.5–2.5 hours

Volume lashes: dramatic and voluminous

Volume lashes offer a more dramatic, voluminous look by applying multiple lightweight extensions per natural lash. This technique suits sparse lashes beautifully and ranges from 2D to 20D density, giving plenty of room to customise.

  • Multiple extensions per natural lash
  • Dramatic appearance
  • High volume
  • Finer extensions
  • Application: 1.5–3 hours

Hybrid lashes: the best of both worlds

Hybrid lashes combine the best of both techniques, blending classic and volume to create a textured look that’s both natural and voluminous. It’s the most requested style and works for almost anyone.

  • Classic and volume combined
  • Textured, balanced appearance
  • Moderate volume
  • Varying thicknesses
  • Application: 1.5–3 hours

Mastering the techniques

Mastering all three opens the door to offering truly customised looks that match a client’s preferences, lifestyle, and event. No one style is best — the best artists can offer all of them and guide clients to what’s right for them.

Siân’s tip: Consider lifestyle when choosing. Classic suits busy schedules, volume is for statement days, and hybrid is the sweet spot in the middle.

A successful lash set isn’t just about what happens in the chair. It’s about what the client does next — which is why how we educate them matters as much as how we apply.

Busting the wet-lash myth

Here’s the biggest misconception: getting your lashes wet doesn’t make them fall out. In fact, cleaning them regularly is essential for making them last longer. Oils and dirt weaken the adhesive far more than water ever will.

The importance of lash cleanliness

Proper client education on gentle, regular cleaning extends extension longevity and keeps the natural lash line healthy. A clean lash line is a happy one — and it’s the first thing I check on every returning client.

Top tips for long-lasting lashes

  • Cleanse regularlywith a gentle, lash-safe foam cleanser.
  • Avoid heavy makeuparound the lash line — particularly anything oil-based.
  • Be gentle. No rubbing, no tugging, no oil-based products.

Maintenance hacks

  • Daily brushing with a clean spoolie.
  • Infill appointments every 2–3 weeks.
  • Quick touch-up options between full appointments for the busiest clients.

Advanced tips

  • Avoid oil-based products anywhere near the eyes.
  • Use a nourishing lash serum that’s formulated to be safe for extensions.
  • Protect from prolonged heat — steam rooms, saunas, and very hot showers.

Mastering these and sharing them with your clients is what builds loyalty. It’s also what makes the difference between a four-week retention and an eight-week one.

Lash mapping is where science meets art. It’s the quiet process that happens before a single extension is applied, and it’s what separates truly great work from merely competent.

Where science meets art

Lash mapping involves creating a customised plan for each client — considering eye shape, natural lash characteristics, and the aesthetic outcome the client is after. This personalised approach is what distinguishes exceptional artists from adequate ones.

The doll eye technique

The doll eye style creates the illusion of larger, rounder eyes by placing shorter extensions at the inner and outer corners and longer ones through the centre. Dimensions typically run from 8mm at the inner corner to around 12mm in the middle, then decrease again towards the outer corner.

Ideal applications
  • Almond-shaped, hooded, or monolid eyes
  • Smaller eyes wanting extra openness
  • Wide-set eye structures
The four-step mapping process
  1. Divide the lash line into even sections (typically 5–7).
  2. Mark the highest point — usually the centre for doll eye.
  3. Graduate the lengths symmetrically towards each corner.
  4. Check mirror consistency between the two eyes before you pick up your tweezers.

The power of personalisation

Effective mapping transforms lash artistry into a confidence-boosting, individualised experience. Each design should reflect the client’s unique characteristics and preferences — a set of lashes is only as good as the map behind it.

Learn mapping properly

Our beginner course teaches mapping step by step, with every major style — doll eye, cat eye, open eye, squirrel and more.

When we talk about lash extensions, most of the conversation is about application. But there’s one step that doesn’t get nearly enough attention — removal. Done properly, it protects the client. Done badly, it damages them.

My experience with lash removal

Across my career I’ve had around four occasions where a full removal was necessary due to a client reaction. Even with strict patch testing protocols, reactions can still occur. Competence in removal isn’t optional — it’s part of being a professional.

Beyond remover: the banana peel method

For sensitive clients or those who react to traditional adhesive removers, the banana peel method is a gentler approach. Carefully isolate, then remove each extension with tweezers using the peeling action the technique is named for. It takes longer, but it’s kinder to the natural lash and doesn’t introduce chemical remover to irritated eyes.

Why proper removal matters

  1. Client safety— improper technique risks damaging natural lashes or irritating the eye area.
  2. Trust— demonstrating competency in every part of the process is what turns clients into regulars.
  3. Complete service— full removal expertise is what separates a professional from a hobbyist.

What you’ll learn in our course

There’s a common assumption that lash extensions are high-maintenance. I’d argue the opposite — and here’s why.

The myth: extensions demand extensive upkeep

Yes, clients visit every 2–3 weeks for infills. But that isn’t a cost — it’s actually a time-saving hack. The daily hours clients spend applying mascara, removing it, reapplying it after every workout or cry or long day — all of that disappears.

Why it’s a win for clients

For busy clients juggling work, family, and social lives, lash extensions are nothing short of a miracle. They wake up polished. No smudged mascara, no morning routine, no reapplying halfway through the day. Just open your eyes and go.

Why it’s a win for you

Regular infills create consistent client retention and a predictable, recurring income stream. The relationships build over months and years — and artists get to refine their work on the same clients, offering increasingly personalised service.

The value proposition

Extensions aren’t just about aesthetics — they’re about convenience and confidence. They enhance a daily routine while boosting self-assurance, and that’s a package worth paying for.

The takeaway

Lash extensions are a time-saving investment in beauty and confidence — not a burdensome commitment. Framed properly to new clients, this reframe alone will earn you business.

Sell the value, not the service

Our beginner course teaches you how to position lash extensions as an investment — not a cost.

Busy clients are the best clients — as long as you give them a routine that actually fits their life. Here are the quick, practical tips that keep lashes looking good between appointments.

Quick tips for amazing results

  • Cleaning is key.A gentle lash cleanser removes dirt and oil that causes premature shedding. Thirty seconds a day is enough.
  • Brush, brush, brush.A clean spoolie each morning keeps lashes tangle-free and photograph-ready.
  • Schedule top-ups.Infills every 2–3 weeks maintain fullness and keep the set looking fresh.
  • Mini infill magic.Shorter touch-up services are a lifesaver for clients between full appointments.

Why these tips matter

Happy clients are repeat clients — and repeat clients are walking advertisements for your work. Simplifying their routine makes them more likely to stay loyal, and more likely to send friends your way.

Bonus: the lash care kit

A small package combining foam cleanser, clean spoolie and an aftercare card creates immediate added value and shows ongoing care. It’s the kind of small detail that turns a service into an experience.

There’s nothing better than stepping onto a plane knowing your lashes look effortless. A bit of planning before and a little care during — and your extensions will still look as fresh when you fly home as they did when you left.

Plan the timing of your appointment

Schedule your lash extension appointment at least two days before you jet off. That gives the adhesive time to bond and fully settle, meaning your lashes are at their strongest by the time you’re poolside.

Sun protection matters

Prolonged heat exposure weakens the adhesive bond. Wear a stylish wide-brimmed hat or carry a parasol — your skin and your lashes will thank you. Stay in the shade during the hottest hours, and let the evenings be your poolside moment.

Be careful with products

Steer clear of oil-based makeup removers, cleansers, and moisturisers. Oils compromise adhesive integrity and will cause premature shedding. Pack a lash-safe foam cleanser and keep your skincare routine around the eyes oil-free.

Cleanse gently

After swimming, rinse your lashes with fresh water and a lash-safe cleanser, then gently pat them dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Never rub or tug. A light brush through with a clean spoolie keeps them looking their best.

Self-care, holiday edition

Use a cooling eye mask in the evenings — it’s gentle, refreshing, and won’t interfere with your extensions. Travel is relaxing; your lashes should be part of that, not a source of worry.

Enjoy the trip. Your lashes are ready.

Book before you fly

We recommend booking at least 48 hours before travel so the adhesive has time to fully cure.

Bridal lashes in 2025 are all about looking like yourself — on the best day of your life. Subtle, elevated, and timelessly beautiful is where the industry is headed. Here’s what the best artists are creating right now.

Natural and wispy aesthetics

Today’s brides are favouring a more natural, effortless look. Wispy lash styles combine classic with subtle volume to create textured, romantic effects without excessive drama — perfect for photographs that will be looked at for fifty years.

Understated approaches

Many brides are choosing subtle lash looks that enhance natural beauty without overpowering the overall bridal appearance. Lash lifts and delicate applications are having a significant moment.

Soft glam eyes

Fluffy lashes that add volume without being overly dramatic — sophisticated yet romantic eye presentations that photograph beautifully in every lighting condition.

Personalised styling

Every bride is unique, and her lashes should be too. The best artists are matching style to eye shape, dress silhouette, hairstyle, and wedding theme — bespoke is the word of the year.

Your bridal lash timeline

  • Schedule a trial 4 weeks before the wedding.
  • Book the final appointment 2–3 days before the day itself to allow the adhesive to cure.
  • Follow strict aftercare — no steam or hot water for the first 48 hours.
  • Brush lashes daily with a clean spoolie.
  • Consider a pre-wedding touch-up if booking more than 2 weeks in advance.
Specialise in bridal lashes

Our beginner course covers all mapping styles for every eye shape, including the bridal work brides are now requesting.

Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest aren’t just where clients get inspiration — they’re where trends are born. Here’s what that means for your work in 2025.

Social media: the ultimate trend incubator

Platforms rapidly transform niche techniques into mainstream phenomena. A styling idea can go from a small artist’s feed to a nationwide request in a matter of days.

Influencers: the new lash gurus

Micro-influencers with niche audiences have largely replaced traditional celebrity endorsements as trusted voices. Hashtags like #LashGoals amplify specific styles and products within the community. Know who your clients follow — it tells you what they’ll ask for.

Four trends to watch in 2025

  1. Coloured and customisable lashes— bold artistic designs enabling personal expression.
  2. Ultra-light volume— fuller appearance without added weight.
  3. Eco-friendly lash products— sustainable packaging and recyclable materials.
  4. Manga-inspired lashes— dramatic styles inspired by anime aesthetics.

Why this matters for artists

Show transformations. Make short-form video. Collaborate thoughtfully with local influencers. Use trending hashtags, but don’t chase them — your perspective is what makes your feed worth following.

When I first enrolled in a lash extensions course, I had no idea how profoundly it would change my life. What started as a curiosity quickly became one of the best decisions I ever made — one that opened doors to endless opportunities, flexible hours, and a rewarding career I now couldn’t imagine living without.

Choosing my own hours

The flexibility is unlike anything I’ve known in a regular job. Rather than working to someone else’s schedule, I choose my own hours — accommodating clients at times that suit us both, and building a week that looks the way I want it to.

More time for life

That flexibility spills over into every part of my world. I have time for the people I love, for travel, for rest, for myself. For the first time, work doesn’t feel like something that’s constantly pulling me away from everything else.

Unlimited earning potential

Demand for lash extensions has skyrocketed. There is no ceiling on what you can earn — whether you build a private clientele, rent a chair at a salon, or open your own studio. You decide what you’re worth, and you scale as fast as you’re willing to work.

A rewarding job

Every day I get to make people feel beautiful and confident. That reaction when a client opens their eyes for the first time — it never gets old. This job is creative, emotional, and genuinely meaningful.

Embracing creativity

Lash artistry is a craft. Every client is a new canvas; every mapping is a new design. From classic and subtle to dramatic and editorial, the work lets you express yourself and grow as an artist.

Repeat clients are the life of your business. Anyone can book a first appointment — but the artists who last are the ones who get people to come back, and to bring their friends. Here are ten strategies that genuinely work.

1. Service excellence

Go beyond the basics. Greet warmly, consult thoroughly, aftercare clearly. Small rituals become large memories.

2. The environment you create

A welcoming space with comfortable furnishings, soothing ambiance, and professional organisation encourages retention more than any discount ever will.

3. Rebook before they leave

Encourage clients to schedule their next appointment before walking out the door. It maintains consistent business flow — and it shows you expect to see them again.

4. A loyalty program that rewards

Points, tiers, or surprise gifts. The best programs make clients feel valued, not just tracked.

5. Engage digitally

Social media isn’t just for reaching new people — it’s how existing clients stay connected between appointments. Share your work, your day, your expertise.

6. Keep learning

Invest in training. Stay current on techniques, trends, and certifications. Clients notice.

7. Personalise everything

Maintain detailed client notes. Remember preferences, past styles, life events. Personalisation builds loyalty more than anything else.

8. Follow up

A simple check-in message 24 hours after an appointment asks how they’re getting on — and quietly encourages a review.

9. Retail what you trust

Selling complementary products keeps clients engaged between visits and creates another revenue stream without extra time at the chair.

10. Referral systems

Incentivise word-of-mouth. Your happiest clients are your best sales team — give them a reason to tell everyone.

Building loyalty takes time. But it’s what separates a one-year career from a twenty-year one.

Build a business that lasts

Last month a client arrived a day early — at 7am. I hadn’t even had my coffee. That small mix-up reminded me that even the best of us need systems, and that how we handle these moments is what separates a career from a job.

Why client communication matters

Good communication isn’t just about avoiding awkward moments — it’s the foundation of building trust and loyalty. Informed clients become repeat clients, and happy clients become your best marketing.

Ten strategies that actually work

  1. Confirm appointmentsby text or email 24–48 hours before.
  2. Set realistic expectationsduring the consultation — style, longevity, cost, upkeep.
  3. Educate clientson lash styles and aftercare so they’re partners in the outcome.
  4. Follow upwithin 24–48 hours after the appointment to check how they’re getting on.
  5. Set office hoursfor replies. You’re not on call — you’re a professional.
  6. Personalise interactions.Remember names, lifestyles, preferences. Little details become loyalty.
  7. Use proper scheduling softwareto eliminate the double-booked or day-early problem.
  8. Handle mistakes with grace.Apologise, offer solutions, move on — don’t over-explain.
  9. Build a loyalty programmethat genuinely rewards regulars.
  10. Use social mediato engage and educate, not just sell.

The real lesson

Effective communication is what turns a lash artist into a brand. Make every interaction leave your clients feeling like VIPs — and they’ll keep coming back.

Your tweezers are like an extension of your hand. Trying to work with the wrong pair is like trying to paint a masterpiece with a toothbrush — technically possible, but nobody should have to.

Why choosing the right tweezers matters

Quality tools are critical for efficient, professional work. The right tweezer reduces hand fatigue, improves consistency, and shortens application time — which means better sets and more clients in a day.

Tweezer types

  • Straight tweezers— versatile tools for isolation and picking up individual lashes. The first pair most artists should own.
  • Curved tweezers— designed for fan creation and placement, helping with lash separation and precise application.
  • Volume tweezers— fine, angled tips for manipulating multiple lashes into fans. Essential for Russian volume work.
  • Isolation tweezers— ultra-fine tips engineered for precision separation of the natural lashes during application.

Tweezer care

Disinfect between every client. Regularly inspect for alignment issues or damage — the tips bend far more easily than people expect. Store them in a protective case when they’re not in your hand.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • Sticky tweezers— clean with a specialist tweezer cleaner; acetone ruins the tips.
  • Slippery grip— look for textured or matte handles; a drop of grip wax also helps.
  • Hand fatigue— switch to lighter, ergonomically designed pairs. Your wrists will thank you.

Choosing your perfect pair

Material, tip geometry, grip, and alignment with your technique all matter. Most artists end up with a small rotation of favourites they return to — finding yours is part of the craft.

Learn which tweezers to trust

Our beginner course recommends and demonstrates the specific tweezers professional artists rely on day to day.

Early in my career I learned the hard way how lash remover reacts when water gets involved. It turns back into a liquid form and then — shock cures. The adhesive goes from liquid to solid white glue in seconds, and suddenly you’ve got blooming where beautiful bonds should be.

What shock curing actually is

Technically called shock polymerisation, it happens when cyanoacrylate adhesive hardens too rapidly due to excessive moisture or humidity. The result is a weak bond and the tell-tale white residue we call blooming.

The four main causes

  • High humidityin the workspace — anything over 60% can be risky.
  • Client eye wateringduring application.
  • Improper nano mister use— too close, too much, too soon.
  • Poor adhesive storage— temperature swings and exposure to moisture degrade it fast.

How to prevent it

Keep your workspace in the optimal humidity range for your adhesive. Store glue somewhere cool, dark, and dry — never the fridge, unless it’s sealed in an airtight container. Use the smallest drop of adhesive you can. Watch for client eye watering and blot gently. Prime the lashes properly to maximise retention and minimise moisture interference.

During removal

Don’t introduce excess moisture when you remove a set. Cleanse with dry microfibre applicators in the right sequence, and never let water get near the remover itself.

If it does happen — the fix

Gently remove the affected extensions using the banana peel method, then reapply fresh ones. Don’t try to salvage blooming — the bond is compromised and the client deserves the set they booked.

Master the science behind the craft

Our advanced course covers adhesive chemistry, humidity control, and retention troubleshooting in full.
